Bamboo Airways and Vietnam Airlines restart direct US flight plan

  • Bamboo Airways and Vietnam Airlines are locked in a race to become the first Vietnamese carrier to establish a direct route to the U.S.

  • The race has been re-triggered by the large demand for such flights amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

  • Without direct flights, people have to transit in East Asia while traveling between Vietnam and the U.S., and the journey can take 18-21 hours. A direct flight would shorten the travel time to 15-17 hours

Q1/ 2001: Vietnam's Foreign capital inflow reaches $4.1 billion 
  • Year to March 20, 234 new projects have been approved with total registered capital of $7.2 billion.

  • Manufacturing and processing received highest investment capital of nearly $5 billion (49.6%) of total registered capital. 

  • Singapore topped the list of investors ($4.6 billion).

  • Long An has attracted the largest portion of capital commitments with $3.2 billion (32.1%).

156km Can Tho-Ca Mau Expressway to start construction in 2022

  • The Expressway will travel through six Mekong Delta provinces.

  • The construction will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will include a two-lane road (13.75m in width). The second will be upgraded to four lanes (24.75m in total width).

  • The first phase will use approximately VND37.611 trillion (~ $1,629 billion) of public capital. The second one will use around VND64 trillion (~ $2,774 billion) under the public-private partnership (PPP) format.

Hanoi plans to build two bridges over Red River at $1.12 billion

  • One (VND 9 trillion) will link Thuong Cat Ward, Bac Tu Liem District with Dai Mach Commune, Dong Anh District. The other (VND 17 trillion) will connect Dong Hoi Commune, Dong Anh with Tu Lien Ward, Tay Ho. 

  •  A Red river urbanization project around 11,000 ha including 3,600 ha of river surface is under planning and submitted for government approval in June. The objective is to build new, modern urban areas, high-quality ecological houses and urban public works.

Q1 GDP grows 4.48 % despite Covid-19 outbreak

  • The industry and construction sector grew 6.3 % year-on-year in January-March period.

  • The agriculture and service sectors were 3.16% and 3.34%

  • The main growth driver was the processing and manufacturing industry (9.45% growth) while the construction industry grew 5.17%

  • Vietnam’s import-export turnover reached an estimated $152 billion in the first quarter, up 24% against the same period last year.

Ever Given ship partially freed in the Suez Canal, authority confirms

  • Marine traffic websites showed images of the ship away from the banks of the Suez Canal for the first time in seven days following an around-the-clock international effort to reopen the global shipping lane.

  • There are still 422 ships waiting to go through the Suez Canal. It could take "6 days or more" for the line to clear. (Maersk statement)

PM approves $147 mln new port in Da Nang

  • The port will be able to accommodate container ships weighing 6,000-8,000 TEUs, expected to be completed in 2025. ~87% of the funding is from the state budget. 

  • The port will relieve the pressure on the overloaded Tien Sa Port in Da Nang, enhance regional connectivity and contribute to the socio-economic development of the city and the central region.
